History of the Hutterites
Faith – Family – Commitment – Pride

Hutterites are a religious group originating in 1528 during the Reformation. Hutterites live communally in rural North America. Hutterites are a communal society, which is they hold all material things in common. This "community of goods" system is directly linked to the Bible.
About 40,000 Hutterites live on 458 colonies in North America today.

Congratulations!

Each Hutterite colony has to provide for between 60 and 160 persons. The Hutterites have been farming and raising livestock for generations and have a rich, successful agricultural history. Their strong work ethic and dedication to excellence is at the core of the creation of the Hutterite Prairie Market.

Each colony is organized with a minister, who is the spiritual leader, and a secretary who manages all the finances. Every operation within the colony is managed by a Hutterite professional who has a lifetime of experience in that field. Experience is passed on through generations giving every Hutterite manager the knowledge to produce an exemplary product. Hutterites don’t view their specialized trade as a job, it’s a lifetime career that carries with it commitment, pride, and dedication.

In general Hutterites consume a majority of what they raise and produce. Their heritage has fostered the mentality to use only what is needed to produce a healthy, great tasting, all natural product. Using agricultural techniques like no till, limited or no use of pesticides and herbicides, and limited or no use of steroids or antibiotics when raising animals, not only benefits themselves but now allows all of us to enjoy their great tasting, safe, and healthy products.

Colony professionals who manage the various operations continually educate themselves on their field of expertise. Through schooling, industry publications, trade associations, seminars, or state extension offices you can be assured that our professional producers are doing everything they can to produce the best product possible. After all, it’s not just their job, it’s their LIFE.
